here's something a little nearer...

...about two hour's drive from Hereford, to be precise. The Olde Smithy bungalow, Foxgloves, at Welcombe "a scattered hamlet" between Bideford and Bude in Devon. Why the recommendation? First, the website editor and his wife have been there and it's good value (see below). Second, it's owned by Beryl Haughton, a Herefordian (tel/fax 357552, email: bj_gorsty@tiscali.co.uk) which means that discussion and/or negotiation won't cost you an arm and a leg. Nor will the weekly rental: an off-season stay for up to four people costs less than £200 a week.

As Beryl says, "Inside you will find every comfort as I use the bungalow a great deal myself and I have never understood why self-catering should be a cross between camping and a car boot sale."

For those who wish to stay close to their rented roof there is a TV, VCR, CD player, lots of videos, a choice of novels, maps and guides, top quality stainless steel pans, and most gadgets. Backed up by all necessary white goods.

For those who want to get out there's the North Devon coastal path, the Tarka cycling trail, wildlife sanctuaries and collections (spring flowers, otters, shire horses, rare farm breeds and falcons), the Tamar lakes for sailing, nearby surfing, golf courses, country houses and gardens, farms and theme parks. Plus wonderful skyscapes, sunsets and views down the valley to Welcombe Mouth.

And, says the editor, it's real peaceful.
